end of lines seems like a hack stuck onto the language. But from a
programming perspective, it seems to me to be quite elegant - I need only
remember one simple rule about where to break lines. This is perhaps a very
simple analogy to natural languages: in terms of formal theory they are a
nightmare to deal with, but people find them very nice to use.
